NAPR chats to Amanda Lewis, Owner and Head Chef of Saucisse Boutique Deli at The Old Biscuit Mill, about her favourite places around the Western Cape…

Amanda launched Saucisse Boutique Deli five years ago – it’s a popular eatery at The Old Biscuit Mill, with a throng of regular customers, as well as pop-ins from celebs like Lily Allen and Hilary Swank, from time to time. Amanda runs the deli in an eco-conscious way – they recycle everything, work in an energy efficient way and donate food to The Haven Night Shelter, so they have no food wastage. Further to that, they also stock and support only local producers. If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favour and get there soon…

Your favourite breakfast to make at home is…
Farm-style omelettes. I like to use up all the extra bits and bobs lying in my fridge to make one large omelette that I can cut into two, for my man and me. I am attempting to not eat bread anymore and this always fills me up. It also works great with a light side salad as a brunch option.

Your best lunch spot in the Western Cape is…
I love spending an afternoon in the garden at Café Paradiso. It feels like I have been whisked away to Europe for the afternoon. The menu has fresh and light options for lunch and there are always yummy specials on offer.

If you wanted to take overseas guests out for a true Cape Town culinary experience, you’d take them to…
The Pot Luck Club in The Old Biscuit Mill. The view from the top of the silo in Woodstock will take your breath away. Go for the early seating option and enjoy cocktails while you watch the sun set over the city, giving you a unique look at the harbour and train stations. And the food is just divine. You can pick and choose what you like off the tapas style menu.

The one hotel you’d love to spend a night in is…
Tintswalo Atlantic. I used to work there as Senior Head Chef in 2008 and dreamed of being able to spend a night in one of their beautiful suites. I grew up in Hout Bay and the hotel offers such a unique view of the area.

Your favourite close-to-home weekend getaway is…
Franschhoek Valley. I lived in France for a while so taking a quick drive with friends and family to Franschhoek does the trick every time. It reminds me of my time spent in Europe, with its own South African twist. It’s easy to rent a house for a few days, making it possible for me to relax and spend quality time with the people I love. The restaurant scene in Franschhoek is also phenomenal and hours of lazy wine tasting in the sun is a must.

The next country you’d like to visit is…
China. I am obsessed with Asian cuisine and I would love to do a week-long cooking course there to broaden my skills. The mix between a fast-paced city and a rich cultural heritage has always sparked my imagination.

Your food inspiration comes from…
The Mediterranean. Fresh, seasonal, and tasty food. Nothing over-complicated or fussy. I believe in top quality produce and Mediterranean cuisine has a way of showing that off like no other.

For a night on the town, you head to…
Bree Street. The list of new and exciting restaurants is increasing daily. My favourite spot for drinks with the girls is La Parada, and for a quick bite to eat I like to head over to Chef’s Warehouse.

Your favourite Western Cape secret spot is…
Cape Point Vineyards. It’s a quick drive out of the city towards Noordhoek; they have a small food market and live music on a Sunday, which is not to be missed!
